Breath Training 2: Prānāyāma Intermediate

Breath Training 2: Prānāyāma Intermediate

(dates TBC)

Led by Dr. Paul Dallaghan
Ph.D in Biological Anthropology and Yoga & Breath Research (Emory University, USA)
and acknowledged in the traditional Indian lineage as “Master Yogi-Prānācharya” (Breath Expert)

Prānāyāma training requires an understanding of the breath, breathwork, the base of breath regulation, and certain kriyas to be able to proceed and really engage in actual Prānāyāma practice. This is the skill of a master teacher with decades of experience that Dr. Paul shares. It is ideal for students who have begun Prānāyāma practice and seek guidance to proceed.

This course can be used as one of the 100-hour modules of the Advanced TT 300-hours certification. It also serves as a Yoga Alliance 100-hour Continuing Education Credit. Its real purpose is to serve your practice and understanding of yoga, whether teacher or an interested student of yoga. For those interested to pursue the Prānāyāma Teacher Training certification this is a required module.

At this Level One completion within the Prānāyāma TT structure, eligible students will earn a Certificate of Breathwork Practice & Teaching. It is considered a preparatory level to actual Prānāyāma teaching.

Program Detail & Approach:

This course is not for beginners to breath and Prānāyāma. The focus is on establishing and understanding the breath, how the regulated breath approach serves as the base or blueprint to all breath and Prānāyāma techniques, delving deep into certain prep and kriya practices within the overall Prānāyāma approach, to practice and learn more deeply the actual Prānāyāma techniques.

Though this course is noted as Level One, it requires previous exposure to breath and Prānāyāma and moves forward to immerse you in Prānāyāma practice, to build a base if interested in teaching Prānāyāma, and covers theory and insights on these techniques from both the traditional texts and modern science.

Emphasis is laid on practice and clarifying all your questions around Prānāyāma practice, to an appropriate level. In addition, certain traditional and scientific topics are presented as part of training:

  • Breath regulation detail
  • Outline of Kriyas – detail and technique
  • Classical early textual references and definition of Prānāyāma
  • Original hathayoga teachings related to Prānāyāma
  • An overview to understand the breath, prāna, and the ‘subtle superstructure’ that is the ‘prānic-energetic’ body
  • A selection of scientific references to both breath and Prānāyāma practices

A Typical Day:

Morning practice begins with a short silent sitting followed by an āsana-for-prānāyāma routine. This leads us into sitting practice of meditation techniques. We continue with the practice of some kriyas and build the breathwork-to-prānāyāma practice, based on the classical method outlined in Psycho-Physical (Hatha-Rāja) Yoga, as taught by Centered Yoga at Samahita. The routine to this point is 3-hours of practice in body, breath, and inner focus. For those that want more and enjoy an active āsana practice we continue with Engaged Dynamic Āsana, alternating between guided class with instruction by the teacher and self-practice, so that the collection of āsanas can be developed in your own time. The afternoon program will be divided between seated energetic center focused meditation, prānāyāma detail and discussion, and a day-closing prānāyāma practice session. For those registered or interested in the Prānāyāma Teacher Training there will be practice of guiding certain breath routines one-on-one to complete the certificate at this level.
